Assessment process
Step 1 – Screening visit
Once you have completed and returned your application form, First Fostering will contact you to discuss your application and a home visit may be arranged.
Step 2 – Start assessment
If successful with your application, we will assign a qualified social worker to undertake your assessment. They will produce a report – known as a Form F – which will cover many aspects of your family life.
Step 3 – Home visits
Your assessment social worker will need to visit your home for a minimum of 8 visits in order to complete the Form F. They will also work with you to compile a portfolio of your competences as a foster carer. This is a joint project between you, your family and the social worker.
Step 4 – Checks
Statutory checks will be undertaken during the assessment which include:
Step 5 – Training
You and your partner if applicable will be required to attend a 3 day ‘Skills to Foster’ training course. The training is very informal and a good opportunity to meet current and future foster carers.
Step 6 – Panel
As soon as the Form F is completed, you will have an opportunity to read through it and discuss any amendments. The report is then presented to the Fostering Panel which you will attend.
Step 7 – Approval
The panel members will make their recommendations to First Fostering but the final decision will be made by a director of First Fostering. Upon approval you will be assigned a supervising social worker and your availability will be advised to local authorities looking for placements.
